The Conference was dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of establishment of an institute of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

 

The conference was attended by the Vice-President of the European Ombudsman Institute, the President of the European Ombudsman Institute, the ombudsmen of the EU member countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States, prominent human rights activists, representatives of all branches of Ukrainian authority, public associations and diplomatic corps. 

 

Francis O´Donnell, UN Resident Coordinator to Ukraine, greeted the participants of the Conference. He called on Ukraine to stay a reliable partner in the issues concerning observance of the Human Rights Declaration.

 

Thomas Hammarberg, the Commissioners for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, appraised achievements of Ukraine in the field of human rights protection.

 

Thomas Hammarberg commented on considerable importance of the institute of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in the settlement of the said issues. .

 

The participants of the International Conference adopted Kyiv Declaration that regards the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a "universal document for establishment of challenges concerning protection of human rights and liberties for the counties, governments, nations, international and national institutes for human rights".

 

Pursuant to Kyiv Declaration, "the UNO, other international organizations, governments and parliaments should exert every effort in order to meet new challenges that threaten both particular countries and the existence of human community as a whole".
